Welcome to
NSBE PRO-PDX's Virtual
A Walk for Education!
Goal:
The goal of A Walk for Education (AWFE) is "to increase awareness of the opportunities available through education particularly in the STEM fields and to shatter myths about African-Americans in math, science, engineering, and other technologies."
In light of the global pandemic, we aim to spread this information without spreading infection.
AWFE is a grassroots program in which NSBE members go door-to-door in underserved Black communities and hand out information on college, scholarship information, SAT/ACT/GRE preparation tools, NSBE and the benefits of majoring in STEM fields.
But COVID made door-to-door activities dangerous, so we are doing this virtually!
Method:
Rationale:
We do this to help fulfill NSBE's mission, which is to increase the number of culturally responsible Black Engineers who excel academically, succeed professionally, and positively impact the community.
By serving the under-served with the academic support necessary to thrive in STEM, we aim to strengthen and diversify the next generation of STEM professionals.
The AWFE Walk Event:
The Portland Professionals Chapter of the National Society of Black Engineers (NSBE PRO-PDX) will host its first virtual walk on Saturday, January 29, 2022, and will plan out subsequent walks later in the year (date to be confirmed at a later time).
During the walk event, we will present information about NSBE, academic success strategies (for both undergraduate and graduate success), career opportunities in STEM, collegiate and trade school admissions information, financial aid (and literacy), and mentorship opportunities.
Each walk event will follow this general format: a 30-minute introduction to NSBE and STEM opportunities, a 60-minute walking session with DJ accompaniment, and a 30-minute closing session to re-iterate the academic success resources and career opportunities.
The AWFE Virtual Portal:
The NSBE PRO-PDX chapter will also maintain an AWFE Virtual Portal so that the critical resources we present during the Walk Events can be available to students year-round. In addition to the recordings of the Walk Events, our portal will hold:
-
Engineering Profiles: Descriptions of the different STEM disciplines along with their career benefits
-
Academic Success Resources: SAT / ACT / GRE preparation materials, effective study habit resources, tips for selecting a college/graduate school/trade school, financial aid and literacy, mentors and more
-
Career Opportunities: The NSBE PRO-PDX Job Board and networking opportunities with our corporate partners.
Next Steps:
The AWFE Virtual Portal is currently under construction; however, registration for the January 2022 AWFE Walk Event is now open. Please RSVP! We look forward to walking with you!
